Résumé

This Chapter of the Florida Statutes, known as “Florida School Food and Nutrition Act”, concerns school food and nutrition services. It declares that it is the policy of the state to provide standards for school food and nutrition services and to require each school district to establish and maintain an appropriate school food and nutrition service program consistent with the nutritional needs of students. To implement that policy, the state shall provide funds to meet the state National School Lunch Act matching requirements. The funds provided shall be distributed in such a manner as to comply with the requirements of the National School Lunch Act. The text further provides for powers and duties of the department school food and other nutrition programs; powers and duties of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services of Florida; school nutrition program requirements; the Florida Farm to School Program; the Children’s summer nutrition program; the department’s responsibilities and functions for food distribution services; the Food and Nutrition Services Trust Fund; and the Healthy Schools for Healthy Lives Council. Notably, the Chapter also provides for food recovery. It states that food recovery programs can beneficially aid residents of this state who lack the means to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables by providing such surplus food to governmental agencies and local volunteer and nonprofit organizations for distribution to those in need, rather than continuing to see it destroyed. The Chapter then contains powers and duties of the department to implement such programs.
