Résumé This Regional Decree, consisting of 17 articles divided into four Chapters and one Annex, approves the new legal regime for the Selvagens Islands Natural Reserve. The Natural Reserve of the Selvagens islands comprises the Selvagem Grande and Selvagem Pequena, Ilhéu de Fora and other adjacent islets and is delimited by the marine area around these islands up to 12 nautical miles in accordance with the map that constitutes the Annex. The Selvagens Islands Natural Reserve, given the importance of the values and natural resources and the respective ecological sensitivity, is an integral protection area, called the Integral Reserve. The Natural Reserve pursues the following objectives: a) Ensuring the good state of conservation and environmental quality of terrestrial and marine areas; b) Creation, maintenance and development of conditions for the recovery of relevant or representative terrestrial and marine ecosystems; c) Compatibility of activities, enhancing the socio-economic benefits that result from the practice of activities within the scope of the protected area and contributing to sustainable socio-economic development; d) Ensuring the protection of the structural features of the landscape and its geological and sociocultural elements; e) Safeguarding and enhancing the cultural elements of the landscape; f) Promotion of a policy for the conservation and preservation of biological and geological heritage; g) Promoting knowledge of the natural heritage, through monitoring programmes and training, information and awareness-raising actions for existing natural values; h) Promotion of scientific studies on bio(geo)diversity and conservation of natural reference conditions for scientific works and projects in progress; i) Promotion of a correct conservation and management strategy compatible with the protection and enhancement of natural resources and the development of human activities, such as nature and scientific tourism.
