The object of the Act is to provide for and ensure safe, secure, sustainable and efficient petroleum activities in order to achieve optimal long-term petroleum resource exploitation and utilisation for the benefit and welfare of the people of Ghana. Conduct of the exploration, development and production of petroleum is in accordance with the terms of a petroleum agreement entered into between the body corporate, the Republic of Ghana and the Corporation. The Act further outlines duration of a petroleum agreement, change of ownership, assignment, sub-contracting and transfer of assets to the Corporation. The Act provides for transportation, treatment and storage of petroleum. Article 81 of the Act refers to environmental principles and protection including impact assessment, liability for pollution damage and its compensation. Other provisions of the Act are general provisions for petroleum activities, cessation, decommissioning and removal of facilities, health and safety provisions, fiscal provisions and tax.
