The ordinance applies to products that bear or intend to bear indications referring to the organic production method, such as “organic” or "organically produced". The products must comply with the rules of production, inspection and labelling specified in the ordinance and its schedules. The ordinance lays down the rules of production for plants and plant products, livestock and livestock products, and seeds and vegetative propagating material. The rules cover aspects such as conversion period, origin of the animals, feed, pest and disease control, and use of fertilisers and plant protection products. The rules aim to ensure the quality and integrity of organic products and to avoid the use of genetically modified organisms and their derivatives. The inspection system is operated by a designated inspection authority or by one or more approved private bodies. The inspection system consists of notification, registration, inspection, approval and supervision of operators who produce, prepare or import organic products. The inspection system also ensures that the products are covered by the specific inspection scheme and that the indications referring to organic production are removed or withdrawn in case of irregularities or infringements.
