Article 1, having established that the said Ordinance regulates the marketing of foods and food ingredients treated with ionising radiation, lays down the cases to which it shall not apply. The requirements for ionisation are set out in article 2. For example, it is only admitted if it is necessary, if there is no danger to human health, is useful for consumers, etc. Moreover, irradiation may be carried out only by means of the sources listed in article 2. The labels of foodstuffs treated with ionising radiation shall bear the words "irradiated" or "treated with ionising radiation". A foodstuff treated with ionising radiation may not be imported from a third country unless it complies with the above-mentioned requirements, is accompanied by relevant documents and has been treated in an irradiation facility approved by the Community.
