Résumé This National Implementation Plan is a nationwide sectoral document aiming at summarizing the Jordanian Government's policy regarding the management of POPs chemicals with the main aim of protecting people and the environment. This can be achieved through (i) reduction of the possibility of human exposure to POPs compounds; (ii) elimination of intentional and unintentional releases of POPs into the environment by applying the principle of best environmental practices; (iii) upgrading existing institutional and legal frameworks for proper management of POPs; (iv) development of a structure for long-term monitoring program of POPs residues in the biological and physical environment to determine the present status and to develop future trends; (v) full inspection of suspected contaminated sites; (vi) phasing out the use of POPs compounds; (vii) eliminating existing stockpiles and wastes of POPs compounds in an environmentally sound manner; (viii) public awareness campaigns about detrimental effects of POPs compounds to human health; (ix) international cooperation on POPs management and information exchange; and (x) cooperation between stakeholders and the concerned governments and institutions. The Government of Jordan, represented by the Ministry of Environment, will implement the NIP by involving experts from public and private sectors as well as concerned NGOs with environmental issues. A National Implementation Unit (NIU) will be established within the Ministry of Environment as a leading body and focal point with the following main tasks (i) supervise NIP implementation and management; (ii) coordinate between different parties involved in NIP implementation; (iii) manage founding in the different activities; (iv) assign different activities to different institutions to carry out the different parts of the NIP; (v) upgrade the POPs inventories; (vi) organize training for POPs concerned employees and workers, particularly those responsible about chemical management, wastes, plant protection, etc.; and (vii) strengthen and supervise the existing national POPs monitoring program and/or network for better environmental monitoring of different POPs compounds and residues.
