Plant protection products are pesticides, primarily of chemical origin, though they can also be of biological origin. They are used in agriculture, forestry and non-agricultural and public areas for the control and eradication of plant pests, such as plant pathogens and diseases, insects, nematodes, mites, pest rodents and weeds and other harmful plant organisms. Based on their intended use or targeted pest organism, they are classified as: insecticides (controling insects); acaricides (controling mites); nematocides (controling phytoparasite nematodes); limacides (controling snails and slugs); corvifuges (controling attacks by birds-repellents); rodenticides (controling rodents); fungicides (controling phytopathogenic fungi); herbicides (controling weeds); and growth regulators (impacting the life processes of plants other than nutrition). Knowledge of the state and status, and control of harmful organisms in a country is an international obligation assumed by the International Convention on Plant Protection and other international agreements to which Croatia is a signatory.
