Résumé This National Action Plan is a nationwide sectoral document aiming at setting up quantitative objectives, targets, measures and timetables to achieve the sustainable use of pesticides and reduce their risks and impacts on human health and the environment, according to the Directive 2009/128/EC of the European Parliament. The envisaged measures will be implemented in three different time phases (i) short term, by the end of 2018; (ii) medium term, in the 2019-2020 period; and (iii) long term, i.e. after 2020. To achieve the overall goal, the document pursues the following objectives (i) spreading the use of agricultural systems and means which make it possible to reduce the use of plant protection products; (ii) reducing the risks to human and animal health and to the environment brought about by the use of plant protection products; (iii) reducing unintentional effects on the environment of the use of PPPs; (iv) establishing indicators to monitor the amounts of plant protection products placed on the market and used both professionally and non-professionally; (v) securing the substitution of PPPs by more sustainable substances or by alternative techniques; (vi) envisaging a 30% reduction in 'big movers' by 2025; (vii) developing strategies to phase out certain active substances (e.g. glyphosate); (viii) banning plant protection products of concern for non-professional use; (ix) increasing the number of agricultural areas farmed through agri-environmental measures in determined drinking water protection areas; (x) improving the protection of pollinators; and (xi) reducing the use of plant protection products by 50 % by 2030.
