It also provides with respect to legal metrology measures. “Legal metrology” means that part of metrology that is concerned with units and accuracy of measurement in relation to the mandatory technical and legal requirements that guarantee the transparency of economic transactions, health, safety, the environment and law enforcement. The functions of the Agency are to— (a) oversee scientific, industrial and legal metrology in accordance with this Act and any other written law; (b) promote the equitable use of measurements in commercial transactions and law enforcement and protect society from the consequences of false measurements; (c) facilitate the use of correct measurements in industry, trade, labour, health, safety, environmental management and other activities that utilise measurement. The Act also, among other things, requires labelling or advertisement to make reference to a standard unit of measurement and empowers the Minister may, by statutory instrument, declare any measurement standard as a national measurement standard.
