This Act enters into force 30 days after its publication in the Official Gazette.
Résumé

The purpose of this Act is to govern the flow of food animals, meat and meat products, to ensure food security and provide safety and quality standards for consumer products, to promote the application of risk analysis based on accepted scientific methodology on applied food safety standards, to support the development of the livestock and poultry industry and to ensure the safety and quality of imported meat and meat products through inspection and documentation. The National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) shall serve as the sole national controlling authority on all matters pertaining to meat and meat product inspection and meat hygiene and a Meat Inspection Board shall be created (Chapter I). Chapters II to V deal with matters related to meat inspection. The NMIS shall inspect and when necessary conduct laboratory analysis of imported meat and meat products after the products are approved for release by the National Veterinary Quarantine Service at the ports of entry. Labelling requirements are specified in Chapter VII. Chapters VIII to X treat matters related to sanitation, product quality and safety and product information and consumer awareness. The remaining part of the Act contains provisions related to prohibited acts, penalties and sanctions, etc.
