In particular, the Regulations lay down provisions relating to slaughterhouses and the inspection of meat. Subject to section 5, no person shall slaughter an animal unless the animal has been inspected by an inspector immediately before the time of the slaughter. Moreover, no person shall slaughter an animal in any place other than an abattoir for which a licence has been issued under section 10 or an establishment operating under the Meat Inspection Act. The text – consisting of 45 sections – deals with the following matters: examination by veterinarian prior to slaughter, dead animals not to be taken to an abattoir, sale of meat, information to be given to inspector, abattoir not to be operated without a licence, licence to operate an abattoir, suspension or cancellation of permits, location and construction of abattoirs, equipment, refrigeration, water, abattoirs to be clean and sanitary, restriction on use of abattoirs, disposal of waste, records and labelling.
