Animal by-products" means an entire body or parts of an animal, products of animal origin or other products obtained from an animal, including oocytes, embryos and semen, which (a) is not intended for human consumption; (b) has been declared unfit for human consumption following ante-mortem or post-mortem inspection; (c) has died; (d) is still born or unborn; or (e) has been killed for reasons of disease control. These regulations apply to animal by-products and derived products described under Part 3 of these regulations and relevant EU legislation; and raw materials used for the production of products of animal origin. Animal by-products and derived products from susceptible species must not be dispatched from farms, abattoirs or similar establishments which are subject to restrictions imposed by the competent authority. Animal by-products are divided into the following specific categories, and the categories reflect the level of risk to public and animal health arising from those animal by-products: (a) category 1 material; (b) category 2 material; and (c) category 3 material.
