Résumé The purpose of this Law is to: (a) protect cultivated plants, meadows, pastures and forests from harmful organisms (pests, diseases, weeds); (b) prevent undesirable effects from the use of plant protection measures that are harmful to human health, flora and fauna, or the environment as a whole; (c) provide the legal basis for activities to protect plants and products of natural origin from harmful organisms; (d) ensure the fulfilment of international and national obligations related to plant protection; and (e)implement state purpose-oriented programs on preventing the spread and development of, and the eradication of, quarantine and especially harmful organisms. Only preparation forms of pesticides and biological means of plant protection, made either in or outside Georgia, that receive positive toxicological, hygienic and ecological assessments and show high biological effectiveness are subject to registration. The purpose of state testing of means of plant protection is to determine their effectiveness, extent of harmfulness for human health and to the environment as a whole. Means of plant protection shall be used only if registered by an appropriate department and included in the list of permitted preparations. Importation of registered means of plant protection shall be allowed only with the permission of a relevant department for research purposes.
