Résumé This Law, consisting of 84 articles divided into six Titles, provides for the environmental policy of Piauí, its elaboration, implementation and follow-up, establishing principles, setting basic objectives and standards for environmental protection and improvement of the population's life. The objectives of Piauí's environmental policy aims at achieving: to adopt habits, customs, social and economic practices not harmful to the environment; adequacy of rural and urban socio-economic activities to the impositions of the environmental balance and of the natural ecosystems; preservation and conservation of renewable natural resources, their balanced management and the rational and judicious use of non-renewable resources; technical and functional commitment of food, medicinal products, material goods and general inputs, as well as spaces built with ecological and environmental health concerns; adequate use of the territorial land and water resources for urban and rural purposes with ecological techniques, as well as treatment and final disposal of waste and effluents of any nature; guarantee of increasing levels of environmental health of human communities and individuals, including through the provision of sanitary infrastructure; gradual substitution of processes and other potentially hazardous agricultural and/or industrial inputs by others based on technology and managing models more compatible with environmental health.
