Résumé Biosphere territories are areas of terrestrial and aquatic ecological systems or their combinations that provide a sustainable balance of biological diversity, economic development and the protection of relevant cultural values. Biosphere territories have the status of specially protected areas at the national level, for which a special regime of protection and use is established. The biosphere territory has special environmental, scientific, cultural, aesthetic, recreational and health significance. The status of a biosphere territory is determined by: (a) the presence of specially protected natural areas; (b) species diversity of flora and fauna, rare and endangered species listed in the Red Book of the Kyrgyz Republic; (c) a complex of natural and historical and cultural monuments; and (d) tourist, resort and recreational complex. The present Law defines legal bases of creation and functioning of biospheric territories in the Kyrgyz Republic. Biospheric territories are created for the purpose of preservation, restoration and use of natural territories with rich natural and cultural heritage, supporting of long-term, steady economic and social development of territories, including recreational use in view of preservation and restoration of natural resources, long-term ecological control, monitoring and ecological research, and also ecological awareness and education. Biospheric territories represent sites of ground and water ecological systems or their combination providing steady balance of a biodiversity, economic development and protection of corresponding cultural values. Biospheric territories have the status of especially protected territories at the national level for which the special mode of protection and use is established. The document consists of 11 Articles. Article 1 determines the purpose of the creation of biospheric territories. Article 2 determines the concept and the status of biospheric territories. Article 3 deals with the legislation of the Kyrgyz Republic on biospheric territories. Article 4 establishes the order of formation of biospheric territories. Article 5 regards zones and a mode of wildlife management of biospheric territories. Art 6. concerns specifications of wildlife management. Article 7 concerns management of biospheric territories. Art.8 deals with financing. Article 9 deals with compensation to the local population. Article 10 establishes responsibility for the infringement of the status of biospheric territories.
