Résumé

This law ratifies two European Conventions on the protection of animals. The first applies to animals kept for farming purposes and it was singed by Greece on 10 March 1976. It outlines the keeping, caring for and housing of farm animals on the farm and especially in modern stock farming systems. Freedom of movement is especially important for animals kept in these systems as well as appropriate lighting, ventilation, temperature and environmental conditions. The second Convention ratified herewith refers to animals for slaughter and it was signed by Greece on 10 May 1976. Its provisions regulate slaughter for the protection of animals so as to ensure that animals are spared suffering, pain, fear and distress for both the benefit of the animal and to enhance the quality of the meat produced. The law, consisting of four articles (ratification (art.1), power to the Minister of Agriculture to make further provisions (art.2), sanctions (art.3)) and entry into force (art.4), adopts all the provisions of both Conventions.
