This Act shall come into force on 1 October 1996.
Résumé

This Act makes provisions with respect of the administration of maritime matters in Iceland. The Minister of Transport and Communications is responsible for centrally administrating navigation, maritime and harbour matters, except where otherwise decided in a different law and the Icelandic Maritime Administration shall be the principal supervisory body. The Icelandic Maritime Administration shall: represent the State in the implementation of the Harbour Act; supervise State-funded projects concerning coastal protection; supervise the implementation of legislation on control, measurement and registration of ships; assume responsibility for issues concerning legislation on measures against marine pollution and regulations issued pursuant to such legislation to the extent that they concern ships and their equipment subject to rules issued by the Minister for the Environment; monitor investigations of marine casualties and assist in such investigations and return reports on maritime court inquiries to the Director of Public Prosecutions, and carry out other tasks defined in article 3. There shall also be a Harbour Council and a Maritime Council, which shall act as an advisory body to the Minister. (8 articles)
