This Act continues the body known as the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (Pouhere Taonga) under the name Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga; continues the Māori Heritage Council; and continues to provide for heritage covenants; continues to prohibit the modification or destruction of an archaeological site; provides for an appropriate response about heritage matters in the event of a national or local emergency being declared; continues the system for a list (formerly the Register), to be known as the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero, comprising historic places, historic areas, wāhi tapu, and wāhi tapu areas, and also to include wāhi tūpuna, as a means for recognising heritage values; and provides for the establishment and maintenance of a list to be known as the National Historic Landmarks/Ngā Manawhenua o Aotearoa me ōna Kōrero Tūturu. Moreover the Act lists the sanctions for breaches of this Act and sets out certain administrative and transitional matters, including the dissolution of branch committees.
