The guidelines should assist the national and local competent authorities and the operators in the food chain in applying the relevant Union legislation. The scope of these guidelines covers products from the food manufacturing process (supplied by food producers), and food which has been placed on the market, packaged or in bulk (supplied by wholesalers and retailers of food). These guidelines address the classification of food no longer intended for human consumption; food not consisting of, containing or being contaminated with products of animal origin, and waste legislation; requirements for food business operators supplying food of non-animal origin to the feed chain; processing requirements and use restrictions of food of animal origin no longer intended for human consumption; food past the ‘use by’ and ‘best before’ dates; presentation, labelling and packaging of food no longer intended for human consumption, due to their status as feed materials; and prohibition on direct use of former food with packaging material and with excessive chemical contamination or microbiological contamination, as feed.
