Objectives of the Act are a) to encourage the development of a competitive market in gas, so as to promote the thermally efficient use of gas and to deliver a safe and reliable supply of gas in compliance with the principles of ecologically sustainable development; b) to regulate gas reticulation and gas supply, so as to protect the interests of customers and to promote customer choice in relation to gas supply and c) to promote the safe use of gas. Part 2 deals with natural gas authorization and pricing, Part 2A with the operation of natural gas retail markets, Part 4 with gas works, Part 5 with enforcement of the Act and related offences and penalties.
