In particular, the Regulations lay down provisions relating to environmental assessment of project concerning oil and gas explorations. In the administration of a first nation’s oil and gas law made in relation to environmental assessment, the decision-making authority and the council of the first nation shall exercise their powers in a manner that protects the environment and human health and applies the precautionary principle. The text – consisting of 55 sections – deals with the following matters: exploration activities, exempted projects, screening process, comprehensive study process, mediation and panel review process, previous assessment and termination of assessment, environmental assessment registry and coming into force.
