Résumé This Decree, composed of 7 articles, establishes the Programme for Amazonia Protected Areas (ARPA), established under the Ministry of Environment and with a duration of 25 years. ARPA has the following objectives: to support/assist the creation, maintenance and consolidation of federal and state conservation units of integral protection and the sustainable use in the Amazon region; to propose mechanisms to ensure the financial support aimed to preserve protected areas and to promote the conservation of biodiversity contributing to its sustainable development in a decentralized and participatory manner. ARPA is regulated by the Programme Committee (the text defines its composition) entitled to deliberate on strategic planning of ARPA and to establish procedures, guidelines and criteria for the formalization of agreements and contracts provided; to monitor and evaluate the activities of the ARPA; to coordinate the participation of federal public administration and state governments in the ARPA; to analyse and advise on the technical and financial performance reports to ensure the achievement of programme goals; and to review and approve multi-year planning of the ARPA.
