Résumé This Decree regulates the Pilot Project for the Protection of Tropical Forests in Brazil and its Coordination Committee, and establishes other measures. The Program's objective is to establish a model for the sustainable development of Brazilian tropical forests, consisting of a set of plans for integrated execution by the federal, state and municipal governments and organized civil society, with the technical and financial support of the international community. It includes activities such as: ecological-economic zoning; monitoring and security; control and auditing; institutional strengthening of state environmental agencies; the establishment and operation of parks and reserves, national forests, logging reserves and indigenous lands; research focusing on sustainable development and the establishment of centers of scientific excellence; natural resources management; the rehabilitation of damaged areas; environmental education and demonstration projects.
