Résumé This Decree-Law, consisting of 15 articles divided into five Chapters and six Annexes, approves the criteria that define the essential requirements of the quality of water for human consumption. It aims at protecting human health from the adverse effects resulting from possible contamination, from collection to distribution at the consumer's tap, guaranteeing its potability and balanced composition, covering two categories of water intended for human consumption, that distributed through public water supply systems and that originating from wells, boreholes and springs. In addition, it regulates water quality obligations, water quality control programme and the analysis laboratory and the sanctioning regime. The following categories of water are excluded: a) Waters commercially distributed by kites, bottles, deposits or tanks, under the terms of article 2 of Decree-Law No. 5/2009 of 15 January, and under the conditions to which refers to its Annex I; b) Waters to support aquaculture; c) Irrigation waters; d) Waters for therapeutic purposes, swimming pools and other. Annexes specify the following: Water standards destined to human consumption; Monitoring frequency; Water Quality Control Programme; Reports; Sample collection; Analytical Methods.
