Résumé

The Act provides for the appointment of the Director of Co-operative Development and other officers. The Act extensively provides for the duties of the Director, who among other things, is to ensure that administration services necessary for the formation, organization, registration, operation and advancement of the co-operative societies. The Act further states the principles that should guide co-operative societies, including; (a.) voluntary membership open to all persons, (b.) societies to be administered democratically, (c.) activities to be carried out with autonomy and independence, among others. The Act accords legal personality to societies by providing that societies shall be incorporated bodies after registration, with perpetual succession, a common seal and the capacity to sue and be sued in its name. The Act provides that, where one of the objects of a society is the sale/disposal of any produce of agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, forestry, handcraft, or other manufactured goods, by it or its members, the society may through its bye-laws or a contract, provide that such sale be made by the member producing the article through the society.
