The Council performs the following functions: (a) to participate in the creation and implementation of European Union and national fisheries policy; (b) to find out the opinion of the public on issues important for the development of the fishing industry; and (c) to participate in the determination of national interests in relation to draft European Union legislation in the field of fisheries. The Council carries out the following tasks: (a) in accordance with the interests of the fisheries sector, to provide recommendations on issues related to the development of fisheries; (b) to coordinate the opinions of state institutions and non-governmental organizations of the fisheries sector on the implementation of fisheries policy; (c) to evaluate Latvian and European Union draft legal acts in accordance with competence; (d) to ensure the informative connection between non-governmental organizations of the fishery sector and the Ministry of Agriculture; (e) in accordance with the competence to present proposals to improve the cooperation of state institutions and non-governmental organizations of the fisheries sector; and (f) to provide proposals on the principles and conditions for the distribution of European Union structural funds and state aid funds.
