In particular, its purpose is to provide for a method to help animals that are in distress and to prevent cruelty to or other mistreatment of animals. The Act contains at the outset a definition clause referring to various terms therein employed such as “animal”, “distress”, “Minister”, ”veterinarian”, “SPCA” (The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). The text consists of 21 sections of which the most important ones are: Prohibited activities (sect. 4); Animal found in distress (sect. 5); Power to search for animal (sect. 6); Animal found by member of public (sect. 7); Destruction of animal (sect. 8); Expenses to be paid (sect. 9); Disposal of animals (sect. 10); Inspection of premises (sect. 11); Duty of staff veterinarian (sect. 12); Penalties (sect.20).
