Recent developments in International Environmental Law are discussed, in particular the impact of the instruments generated through the UN Conference on Environment and Development. The new orthodoxy of sustainable development is then considered, with emphasis placed on the possibilities of implementation. The role of regional organisation is discussed, as well as the role of existing and future international institutions. The paper concludes with a discussion of the draft International Covenant on Environment and Development, and some practical implications of globalisation for relevant United Nations organisations.
