Resumen This Act lays down provisions on the functions and powers of the Barbados National Standards Institute; the establishment, formulation, issuance and publication of Barbados National Standards by the Institute; the declaration of compulsory standards; prohibitions of production, sale, importation, possession or use of commodities or prepackaged products; labelling of commodities and marking of goods; the appointment, powers and duties of the trading standards inspectors; and offences and penalties. The Agreement Establishing the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality has the force of law in Barbados and annexed to this Act in Schedule 1. The Compulsory Barbados National Standards are listed in Schedule 2 and include standards on food and labelling of prepackaged meat and poultry parts/cuts and fish and fishery products as well as food in general. Compulsory standards are declared to (a) protect the consumer against danger to health or safety; (b) protect plant and animal health and life; (c) ensure quality in commodities and services produced for use in Barbados or for export; (d) protect the economy of Barbados; (e) prevent fraud or deception arising from misleading advertising or labelling; (f) require adequate information to be given to the consumer; (g) safeguard the interest of the public; or (h) safeguard the national security of Barbados.
