A standard can be developed and adopted under this Act or may be a standard proposed by the Caricom Regional Organization for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) and approved by the Caribbean Common Market Council for Trade and Economic Development (and subsequently adopted by the Suriname Standards Bureau). The Act sets out requirements and procedures for the adoption of standards by SBS. The Bureau shall be authorized to investigate complaints about goods by customers. If no mandatory standard has been established by SBS for certain goods, but there exists a non-mandatory foreign specification or standard in respect of the goods, the Bureau may declare that the goods do or do not comply with the standard or the foreign specification. In this case such goods may not be imported, exported or placed on the market without a label that indicates non-compliance with such standard. Goods subject to a mandatory standard or a foreign specification may not be imported or exported or placed on the market in case of non-compliance with the standard or specification.
