Yak (grunting ox/Bos mutus/Poephagus grunniens) breeding in the Republic of Tajikistan is considered one of the main sectors of livestock breeding, as climatic and pasture and feeding conditions of the highlands contribute to further development of this sector. Further development of breeding is of great importance, primarily for ensuring food security of the country. This program provides for an increase in the number of yaks (grunting ox/Bos mutus/Poephagus grunniens), as reserve for increasing meat and wool production, at the same time the efficient use of the possibilities of natural pasture feed in the highlands. The Program provides for the following tasks: (a) ensuring the protection of the genetic resources of yaks as rare species of farm animals and farm income source in highlands of Tajikistan; (b) increase in numbers and targeted increase in productivity of yaks in specific climatic conditions of the region; and (c) efficient use of natural and economic resources in mountain and foothill regions of the country in order to restore and further develop livestock breeding sector.
