Resumen

The Decree, consisting of sixteen articles, regulates the reproduction of bovines, ovines and swines. Animals may be used for reproduction purposes only if they meet the requirements established by article 1, which include registration, certification and identification conditions. Holders of reproductive animals belonging to the bovine, swine and ovine species shall transmit annually to the Regional Association of Farmers in Sicilia (A.R.A.S.) the list relative to animals used for natural mounting purposes. Article 2 regards public natural mounting and related authorization (which shall be issued by the Provincial Inspectorate of Agriculture). Article 3 concerns, on the other hand, natural mounting of horses. Further provisions regulate artificial insemination. Centres producing and supplying semen intended for artificial insemination shall be authorized by the competent Provincial Inspectorate for Agriculture (art. 5). Article 7 regulates the collection of semen of autochthonous species. Artificial fertilization may be operated exclusively by registered veterinarians and authorized operators (art. 8). Article 9 makes provision in matter of production, collection, conservation and distribution of embryos. Quality inspections and sanitary checks must be carried out, in compliance with articles 12 and 13. Article 14 prohibits the placing on the market and prescribes the destruction of semen which does not comply with the requirements hereby established.
