Reserve shall be located partly in the South Kurili area of the Sakhalin region with total area of 45000 ha, including land area of the islands 19800 ha, defined marine area of the Pacific ocean – 25200 ha. Reserve shall have the following purposes: (a) conservation of natural ecosystems (landscapes); (b) conservation, recovery and reproduction of wild fauna and biological diversity, conservation of migration routes; (c) research; (d) ecological monitoring; and (e) ecological education. The following activities shall be prohibited on the territory of reserve: (a) all types of hunting; (b) industrial fisheries; (c) land reclamation and irrigation; (d) housing construction; (e) application of chemicals and fertilizers; (f) timber extraction and procurement of non-timber forest products; and (h) introduction and acclimatization of living organisms.
