This Act, consisting of 36 Articles organized into six Chapters, seeks to establish a legal framework for standardizing commodities and processes in South Sudan. This framework encompasses procedures, safety requirements, manufacturing methods, materials, quality, strength, purity, composition, quantity, dimensions, weight, grade, durability, origin, age, and other characteristics, separately or in combination, as specified in the Interpretation article. Article 5 establishes the National Bureau of Standards playing a crucial role in establishing and enforcing standards to ensure the quality, safety, and conformity of products and processes in the country, in particular (i) formulating standard specifications and codes of practice; (ii) promoting standardization programs within South Sudan and international standardization activities; (iii) advising the government on policies and regulatory frameworks for standards and metrology, aligning them with international and regional agreements; (iv) serving as the accreditation body for assessing and accrediting institutions involved in conformity assessment activities; (v) enforcing standards to protect public health, safety, and the environment against harmful or substandard products; (vi) conducting market surveillance to remove dangerous products, counterfeits, and substandard goods from the market; (vii) representing the government internationally in matters related to standards and conformity assessment; (viii) collaborating with various stakeholders to promote the adoption and application of standards; (ix) developing and maintaining information services and resources related to standardization, quality assurance, metrology, testing, and related topics.
