In the light of Council Directive 85/397/EC, these Regulations reenact a modified version of the amended Milk (Special Designation) Regulations 1986 to address health and animal health problems in intra-Community traded heat-treated milk. The Regulations prescribe designations 'Untreated', 'Pasteurized', 'Sterilized' and 'Ultra Heat Treated') and a licence application and renewal procedure of use in the production, handling, treatment, storage, distribution and sale of milk. The Regulations also provide for the refusal, suspension and revocation of licenses authorizing use of these special designations as well as an appeals procedure for affected license-holders.
