Resumen

The purpose of this Act is to promote the identification, protection, preservation, and conservation of the historical and cultural heritage of New Zealand. This Act continues the body known as the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (Pouhere Taonga) under the name Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga; continues the Māori Heritage Council; and continues to provide for heritage covenants; continues to prohibit the modification or destruction of an archaeological site; provides for an appropriate response about heritage matters in the event of a national or local emergency being declared; continues the system for a list (formerly the Register), to be known as the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero, comprising historic places, historic areas, wāhi tapu, and wāhi tapu areas, and also to include wāhi tūpuna, as a means for recognising heritage values; and provides for the establishment and maintenance of a list to be known as the National Historic Landmarks/Ngā Manawhenua o Aotearoa me ōna Kōrero Tūturu. Moreover the Act lists the sanctions for breaches of this Act and sets out certain administrative and transitional matters, including the dissolution of branch committees.
