They complement and elaborate on existing legislation and promote good and responsible marketing practices. They are intended to raise awareness among businesses about the challenges of marketing food and beverages to children and adolescents, and to help protect these groups from adverse marketing influences. Children are considered to be individuals up to and including twelve years of age; adolescents include individuals from thirteen to eighteen years of age. High-calorie and nutrient-poor products are food and beverages that have a high content of fat, especially saturated fat/trans fat, added sugar, or salt, and a naturally low content of vitamins, minerals, or dietary fiber.
