The stated objectives of the Act are (a) ensuring food for sale is safe and suitable for human consumption; (b) preventing misleading conduct relating to the sale of food; (c) applying the food standards code. Part 2 specifies offences relating to food, including handling of food in unsafe way, sale of unsafe food, false description of food and non compliance with food standards code. Part 3 is dedicated to emergency powers for example to require the publication of warnings, in a form approved by the chief executive, that a particular food or type of food is unsafe (sect. 19 a) or to prohibit a particular food or type of food from being advertised or sold (sect. 19 c). Part 4 covers hygiene requirements and control of food stores and other place, food vehicles and equipment. Part 5 is dedicated to the administration and enforcement of the Act, including inspections by authorized officers. Part 5A covers appeals and Part 6 contains miscellaneous provisions. The Act is completed by three schedules on: subject matter for regulation, changes to food standards code and dictionary.
