Resumen

This FMP North Pacific Fishery Management Council sets out the salmon management policy to facilitate State of Alaska salmon management in accordance with the Magnuson-Stevens Act, the Pacific Salmon Treaty, and other applicable federal law. Under this policy, the Council identifies six management objectives to guide salmon management under the FMP and achieve the management policy. The North Pacific Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional councils established by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act in 1976 to manage fisheries in the 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone. The Magnuson-Stevens Act requires fishery management plans to be consistent with a number of provisions, including ten national standards. Besides the Magnuson-Stevens Act, U.S. fisheries management must be consistent with the requirements of other laws, such as the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act. The FMP also incorporates restrictions on Alaska salmon fisheries consistent with the 1985 Treaty between the Government of Canada and the Government of the United States of America Concerning Pacific Salmon. The FMP is divided into 9 Chapters: Introduction (1); Description of the fishery management unit (2); Management policy and objectives (3); Roles of agencies in implementing this plan (4); Regulation of the salmon fisheries (5); Status determination criteria (6); Essential fish habitat and habitat areas of particular concern (7); Fishery impact statement (8); Federal review of state management measures applicable in the east area (9).
