The Minister with responsibility for External Affairs may establish the outer edge of the Continental Margin (as defined) wherever the margin extends beyond 200 nautical miles from the baseline from which the breadth of the territorial sea of Trinidad and Tobago is measured. Section 3 regulates the exploration and exploitation of the Shelf. Section 5 provides for the application of criminal and civil law of Trinidad and Tobago in areas designated by the President under section 3(6). The Act also defines the offence of discharge of oil in designated areas of the Continental Shelf.
