Resumen

The Strategy for Gender Equality & Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) for 2018-2028 sets forth a plan to realize Aspiration 6 of the African Union’s Agenda 2063: “An Africa where development is people driven, relying upon the potential offered by people, especially its women and youth and caring for children,” and the principles enshrined in Article 4 (l) of the AU’s Constitutive Act: “promotion of gender equality” as well key continental and global commitments. The GEWE strategy has four pillars, each having specific sub-outcomes: Pillar one covers – Maximizing opportunities, outcomes and E-TECH dividends; Pillar two – Dignity, security and resilience; Pillar three – Effective laws, policies and institutions; Pillar four – Leadership, voice and visibility. Women living in rural areas are a specific target group. Challenges such as lack access to productive resources (land, credit, and agricultural extension services), education and health are addressed.
