N°: 897 State Party: Germany Criteria: C (iii) (vi) The Committee inscribed the site on the World Heritage List on the basis of criteria (iii) and (vi): Criterion (iii): The Castle of Wartburg is an outstanding monument of the feudal period in Central Europe. Criterion (vi): The Castle of Wartburg is rich in cultural associations, most notably its role as the place of exile of Martin Luther, who composed his German translation of the New Testament there. It is also a powerful symbol of German integration and unity. The Observer of Poland pointed out that this inscription recognized the value of the restorations of the nineteenth century and the Observer of the Holy See stressed the importance of the Wartburg Castle for history and Christian spirituality (St. Elizabeth of Thuringen).
