Abstract

Objectives: To restrict and prohibit the use of drift nets in the South Pacific region in order to conserve marine living resources Summary of provisions: (a) Each Party agrees to take measures not to encourage the use of drift nets by prohibiting their use and transhipment of catches, by drift net processing or import of products to and from drift net catches and possession of drift nets and by restricting access of vessels using drift nets to ports (art. 3); (b) Each Party is to take appropriate measures to ensure the application of the Convention and to cooperate in surveillance and enforcement measures (art. 4); (c) Cooperation between the Parties and with non-Parties to implement the Convention (arts. 5, 7and 8); (d) Establishment of the South Pacific Forum Fisheries Agency to coordinate the implementation of the Convention (arts. 1 and 6).
