Abstract

Objective: To preserve nature, natural areas and the landscapes, especially in boundary regions.

Summary of provisions: Parties undertake to develop the concept of the protection of transboundary natural areas and landscapes (art. 3, para. 1) and to establish programmes for the protection of such areas (art. 3, para. 2). They agree to consult on management projects concerning transboundary areas. Finally, Parties are to establish the status of protection areas (art. 3, para. 2).

Comment

The aims of this Convention are to provide for a mechanism of concertation and cooperation in the field of conservation, management and restoration of the natural environment and landscapes; this shall be achieved, inter alia, through harmonization of policies and legislation, exchange of information, and establishment of transfrontier protected areas; common conservation and management concepts and programmes are to be developed with regard to nature conservation in border areas and in areas which are important for migratory species
