United Kingdom: On 19 December 2003, an instrument of ratification was lodged by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (on behalf of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland). On 3 December 1999, an instrument of ratification was lodged and deposited 10 December 2001 with respective declarations by the United Kingdom on behalf of Pitcaim, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, Bermuda, Turks and Caicos Islands, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Virgin Islands and Anguilla. Objectives: To ensure the long-term conservation and sustainable use of straddling fish stocks and highly migratory fish stocks. Summary of provisions: The area to which the Agreement applies is defined in Part I (article 3). The Agreement is further constituted by twelve parts, as follows: Part II provides general principles for the adoption of conservation and management measures for straddling stocks and highly migratory fish stocks, including the precautionary principle. Part III provides mechanisms for international co-operation concerning such stocks; Part IV concerns non-members and non-participants; Part V deals with duties of the flag State; and Part VI with compliance and enforcement of conservation and management measures. Part VII draws attention to the special needs of developing States, Part VIII sets a peaceful settlement of disputes mechanism, and Part IX calls for Parties to encourage non-parties to become Parties and/or to comply with the Agreement. A review conference is programmed four years after the date of entry into force of the Agreement, to review it and assess the adequacy of its provisions (Part XII).
