Abstract

The Lao public and government are becoming increasingly aware of sustainable development issues. Laos is also beginning to develop a comprehensive body of domestic legislation to deal with conservation and pollution issues. The government plans to adopt a framework environmental law soon and has demostrated a firm commitment to care for the environment by pursuing a variety of training programs and projects. As Laos prepares to enter the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), where it will take part in the ASEAN Ministerial Meetings on the Environment, it also hopes to become a party to various international environmental conventions. The prospects for sustainable development in Laos appear hopeful. Success depends on a coordinated environmental approach between the central goverment and the provinces, the adoption of a framework environmental law, and additional domestic legislation, strong enforcement efforts, and increased environmental awareness
