Abstract

In recent years the Debt for Nature Swap has been utilised in an attempt to combat the twin evils of spiralling foreign debt and environmental destruction. This article proposes to provide an overview of Debt for Nature Swaps: Their structure, implementation and the arguments both in favour and against the swaps. The writer concludes that despite some difficulties in their initial implementation the Debt for Nature Swap may prove to be a useful method of assisting with the problems of debt and environmental damage, especially if utilised in wider aid programmes which encompass not only environmental concerns but deal also with social and economic problems
