Abstract

Adopted in Tunis 2004-05-22 In force: 2008-03-15 This is the first English translation of the 2004 Arab Charter on Human Rights made by Dr. Mohammed Amin Al-Midani, President of Arab Center for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Education and Mathilde Cabanettes (Boston University School of Law). Revised by Professor Susan M. Akram (Boston University School of Law). The first version was adopted on 1994-09-15, but no Arab League State had ratify it. The 1994 Charter consisted of four parts containing 43 Articles. The vast majority of those were drastically redrafted in the 2004 version, with a number of new rights added. The new version of the Charter makes no reference to the previous instrument, not even in the Preamble where other international and regional instruments are referred to. (available in: 12 Int'l Hum. Rts. Rep. 893 (2005)
