The creation of this Code comes along with the implementation of Council Directive 91/676/EEC on the protection of waters against pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources. The Code has the aim of promoting guidelines able to assist farmers to reduce water pollution caused by fertilizers from agricultural sources and to prevent further such pollution and to set the acceptable environmental conditions for the use of urban waste water for irrigation purposes. It mainly deals with land application of fertilizers, waste water treatment, waste water recycling and sewerage disposal.
