Abstract This Waste Management and Pollution Control Strategy is a 10-year nationwide sectoral document aiming at planning the waste management and pollution control in the natural environment, with the vision for clean, healthy and green happy isles, by directly empowering the islanders. To achieve the overall goal, specific objectives are (i) prevent that any economic development compromises the well-being of natural environment, ecosystems and people; (ii) ensure that existing legislation, strategies and guidelines on waste management and pollution control are effectively implemented and enforced; (iii) encourage 4Rs (reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery) and regulate waste minimization for solid wastes; (iv) develop institutional capacity and train waste and pollution experts; (v) ensure that all provincial center have proper landfills or waste disposal sites and a functioning waste collection system; (vi) all Solomon Islanders are aware of the issue of waste and pollution and are taking appropriate actions to address it; (vii) undertake activities based on accurate data and research, update information, new innovation and technology; (viii) encourage public-private partnership and investment; (ix) put in place a long-term financial mechanism to manage waste and address pollution issues; (x) international guests and tourists are able to enjoy the natural beauty of the country; and (xi) waste management and pollution control are fully addressed in responses to climate change impacts and natural disasters.
